When sisters Bushra and Rumina set out to create Engrain, their ambition was to give the Barnes community a convenient and enjoyable way to shop more sustainably.
The result was Barnes’ first zero-waste shop: an inviting package-free retail destination offering an extensive selection of everyday products, including nuts, grains, pulses, cereals, pasta, dried fruit, confectionery and household essentials.
Martek Zero Waste was delighted to help transform the empty retail space into a practical and attractive store designed around refill and reuse.
Creating an Engaging Zero-Waste Shopping Experience
A successful zero-waste retail environment needs to do more than reduce packaging. It must also make package-free shopping simple, hygienic and appealing to customers.
The Engrain display was designed to make its products highly visible while allowing shoppers to buy exactly the quantity they need. Clear bulk dispensers showcase the colours and variety of the products, helping the display become an integral part of the store’s interior rather than simply a functional storage system.
Customers can bring their own containers, select their products and purchase only what they require. This helps reduce reliance on single-use packaging while also limiting unnecessary food waste.
Gravity Bins and Scoop Bins for a Varied Product Range
A combination of gravity bins and scoop bins allows Engrain to offer a much broader selection of package-free products.
Gravity bins are ideal for free-flowing foods such as:
- Cereals and grains
- Rice, pasta and pulses
- Nuts and seeds
- Coffee beans
- Small sweets and snacks
Customers operate the handle to dispense the required amount directly into their container. Adjustable flow control makes gravity bins easy to use while helping the retailer manage portions and reduce product spillage.
Scoop bins are better suited to products that are delicate, irregularly shaped, sticky or powder-based. They provide an effective solution for larger confectionery, dried fruit, flour, granola and other products that may not flow easily through a gravity dispenser.
Using both types of bulk dispenser gave Engrain the flexibility to merchandise a varied product range within a coordinated zero-waste retail display.
Designed for Practical, Everyday Retailing
For package-free retail to work successfully, dispensers must be straightforward for customers to use and practical for store teams to refill, clean and maintain.
The transparent containers help staff monitor stock levels easily while giving customers a clear view of the products. Product labels can also communicate essential information such as ingredients, allergens, prices and product origins.
The modular nature of the display means that the product selection can be adapted as customer preferences change. Individual gravity bins and scoop bins can be assigned to different foods, allowing the retailer to refresh the range without redesigning the entire store.
Supporting the Growth of Package-Free Retail
Engrain demonstrates how thoughtful design and reliable refill equipment can turn an empty shop into an engaging package-free retail destination.
By making sustainable shopping accessible and attractive, independent zero-waste shops can help customers reduce disposable packaging without compromising on product choice or convenience.
For Martek, it was a pleasure to support Bushra and Rumina in bringing their vision to life and helping introduce package-free shopping to the Barnes community.
